Entering by boat: Wallis and Futuna
What to do to enter Wallis and Futuna by sea: the procedures, the papers to present and the ports where you can clear in.
Check with the authorities before you leave (last checked on 28 October 2026).
The steps
- Call Port Control Mata-Utu on VHF 16 when entering the lagoon.
- Anchor as directed and take the dinghy to the quay.
- Customs at the quay, then the gendarmerie about 500 m away with every crew member's passport.
- Before leaving (including to the other island): visit customs and gendarmerie again.
Papers to have on board
- Passports for the whole crew
- Visas, if your nationality requires them
- Crew list
- Boat papers (registration certificate)
- Outward clearance from the previous country
Good to know
- Two entry points: Mata-Utu quay (Wallis) and Leava quay (Futuna). Always customs first, then the gendarmerie (immigration).
- You must clear out and in again between Wallis and Futuna.
- Wallis: Gahi Bay is the only authorised anchorage; clear in at Mata-Utu before choosing where to anchor.
- The official tourism page dates from the Covid period (yachts banned): check current status before sailing.
- French visa rules apply (French territory): check France-Visas.
