Entering by boat: Montserrat

What to do to enter Montserrat by sea: the procedures, the papers to present and the ports where you can clear in.

Based on official sources, checked on 28 October 2026.

Before you arrive

  • Online procedure: SailClear (pré-déclaration recommandée) — sailclear.com

The steps

  1. Call Port Security on VHF 16 when entering territorial waters.
  2. Anchor and take the dinghy to Little Bay wharf.
  3. Customs and immigration in the terminal (Port Authority compound).
  4. Ask for a coastal cruising permit to visit other bays.

Papers to have on board

  • Passports for the whole crew
  • Crew list
  • Boat papers (registration certificate)
  • Outward clearance from the previous country

Good to know

  • Little Bay is the only port of entry.
  • Volcano exclusion zone: free coastal cruising permit (up to 7 days) to land on authorised beaches outside the zone.
  • New Little Bay port works: anchoring there has become unreliable; anchor in Rendezvous Bay or Carr's Bay instead (2023 report).
  • Clearance free on weekdays; arrival charge EC$50 (under 20 GRT) or EC$100, plus EC$10 port clearance.
