Entering by boat: Mauritius
What to do to enter Mauritius by sea: the procedures, the papers to present and the ports where you can clear in.
Check with the authorities before you leave (last checked on 28 October 2026).
The steps
- Send arrival information (crew, boat, insurance, last clearance) before departure.
- Request free pratique from Port Louis Port Control on VHF 16 (then 14).
- Berth at the Customs-Immigration dock at the end of the channel; health inspection first.
- Complete the Customs forms and keep the clearance certificate on board.
Papers to have on board
- Passports for the whole crew
- Crew list
- Boat papers (registration certificate)
- Insurance certificate
- Outward clearance from the previous country
- Maritime declaration of health
- Papers for animals on board
Good to know
- Port Louis is the only official port of entry on Mauritius island; a boat cleared in at Rodrigues must clear again at Port Louis.
- Port Louis is closed 18:00-06:00: anchor off the entrance and wait for morning.
- Obtain free pratique by radio (VHF 16/14) before entering; nobody goes ashore before the health inspection.
- Send crew list, passports, papers and insurance in advance (noonsite gives harbourradio@mauport.com, not confirmed on an official site).
