Entering by boat: Italy

What to do to enter Italy by sea: the procedures, the papers to present and the ports where you can clear in.

Check with the authorities before you leave (last checked on 28 October 2026).

The steps

  1. Coming from a non-Schengen country, choose a border-post port.
  2. Q flag; report to border police with passports and crew list.
  3. See customs if you have goods to declare.

Papers to have on board

  • Passports for the whole crew
  • Visas, if your nationality requires them
  • Crew list
  • Boat papers (registration certificate)

Good to know

  • Arriving from a non-Schengen country (Tunisia, Albania, Montenegro…), enter through one of the 113 official sea border posts for passport checks.
  • EES (fingerprints and photo of non-EU travellers) fully running since 10 April 2026.
  • ETIAS expected end of 2026, date not confirmed.
