Entering by boat: Spain (mainland and Balearics)

What to do to enter Spain (mainland and Balearics) by sea: the procedures, the papers to present and the ports where you can clear in.

Check with the authorities before you leave (last checked on 28 October 2026).

The steps

  1. Coming from a non-Schengen country, choose a port with a border post.
  2. Report to the Policía Nacional border office with passports, boat papers and crew list.
  3. The marina often passes the details to the authorities.

Papers to have on board

  • Passports for the whole crew
  • Visas, if your nationality requires them
  • Crew list
  • Boat papers (registration certificate)
  • Insurance certificate

Good to know

  • Arriving from a non-Schengen country (Gibraltar, Morocco, UK…), get passports stamped / non-EU crew registered at a sea border post (official list below).
  • EES (fingerprints and photo of non-EU travellers) running since 12 October 2025, fully since 10 April 2026; some ports started later (Las Palmas mentioned).
  • Ceuta and Melilla are in Schengen: going there does not count as leaving the Schengen area.
  • From La Línea (Alcaidesa), the border police office is at the land border post with Gibraltar.
