Entering by boat: Egypt

What to do to enter Egypt by sea: the procedures, the papers to present and the ports where you can clear in.

Check with the authorities before you leave (last checked on 28 October 2026).

Before you arrive

The steps

  1. Choose an agent before arrival (entry and Canal).
  2. Clear in at Alexandria or Port Said; visas through the agent.
  3. For the Canal: boat measured, dues paid, pilot on board (customary tip).
  4. Two-day transit with a stop at Ismailia, then exit at Suez (Port Tewfik).

Papers to have on board

  • Passports for the whole crew
  • Visas, if your nationality requires them
  • Crew list
  • Boat papers (registration certificate)
  • Insurance certificate
  • Outward clearance from the previous country
  • Going through an agent

Good to know

  • An agent is practically essential, for entry and for the Suez Canal transit; beware of low quotes that rise later.
  • Reported southbound fees: about USD 400 canal dues + USD 652 port clearance (1-18 m yacht), agent extra.
  • The registration certificate must say "Pleasure Yacht/Craft"; originals required. Canal charts SC01, SC02 and R11 requested on board.
  • Port Said Yacht Club and Suez Yacht Club closed for works (reports); Ismailia is the only Canal marina bookable in the app.
  • El Alamein is not a port of entry: clear in at Alexandria and ask for a sailing permit.
